Spruce Up Your Bedroom With The Best Mattress for Lower Back Pain Sufferers

Yes, it’s possible to eliminate the back pain, create the suitable, memorable and modern bedroom of your dreams by marrying a mix of a firm mattress and bedroom lighting with super comfortable pieces.

Back pain can be a serious issue, my mom suffered excruciating pain in her back for years. There are several causes of this pain, however, you can do something about it by carefully selecting the right mattress and bedding that are best-suited for pain. Agility Bed (a popular brand) has a couple of mattresses that are designed to help you.

If you need a little nudge and inspiration to nail it, I’ve created this complete guide to help you create a soothing space that will accommodate a mattress specifically designed to relieve back pain, no matter how severe. The good part is, your bedroom will not feel cluttered and disorganized.

One-third of our lives are spent in bed and this rest period is sometimes punctuated by painful awakenings.

Why does your back hurt at night and what can you do?

What you need to know: lying still slows down the blood circulation in the support areas.

If you turn around often, it’s simply because your body sends you warning signals that force you to change position to “stretch” muscles and joints that are stuck in an uncomfortable position (stretching or compression).

Most of the time we do not wake up or we go back to sleep immediately.

But often the intensity of the pain wakes us up due to numbness of the limbs, slenderness, or pain to type of bite or tear in the lumbar or cervical spine.

What do these pains reveal?

These pains are triggered by the prolonged position but they are indicative of a real spinal problem that should not be treated symptomatically.

Most of the time, it is a question of vertebral blockages due to many causes which is necessary to treat (following shocks or efforts, bad posture…)

It will also be necessary to consider changing bedding in order to improve the quality of your sleep.

Because the pains that wake you up disrupt your sleep, prevent you from recovering, and exhaust your nervous system, which can lead to real nervous exhaustion (burnout).

A serious osteopathic and postural evaluation is necessary and the choice of a good bed becomes for you a priority question.

The six most important facts about back pain

  1. 90% of all back pain do not have a clear diagnosis.

  2. For those 30 to 50 years old, the likelihood of having a lumbago is highest.

  3. Already 35 percent of the younger population have prolapsed or degenerated discs.

  4. 80 to 90 percent of patients with chronic low back pain have mild depression.

  5. 80% of chronic back pain is due to neglect of the back muscles.

  6. 85% of all people are not symmetrically built and therefore have a higher risk of disc damage.

Back pain: which mattress to choose?

Your bedroom deserves some upgrade with a cozy mattress that doesn’t hurt. If you no longer dream of a restful sleep, but would like to finally experience quiet nights, you should consider a few things when choosing your mattress.

The size of the bedroom, the style, the lighting of the bedroom would determine the degree of hardness of mattresses and for whom they are suitable is paramount when making your choice.

Read our advice on mattresses and find out which one suit you best.

By dividing it into several lying zones, it is possible to support the body in different ways. Ideally, the mattress is firmer in the area of heavy body parts so that the spine lies straight.

The widespread problem of waking up every morning with back pain is an unmistakable sign that the mattress does not perform its supporting function adequately.

In this case only an exchange helps to finally wake up painlessly and start the day in a good mood.

Also keep in mind that the support function of your mattress declines after eight to ten years and then a new purchase is recommended.

The degree of hardness is the unit of measurement for the firmness of the mattress. The higher the degree of hardness, the firmer the mattress, so that the body is supported more and sinks less.

Too much sinking causes the body to “sag” and leads to back pain.

However, if the mattress is too tight, the heavier parts of the body cannot sink enough, so that the spine becomes unnaturally curved and one wakes up in the morning with back pain.

So it’s not easy to find the perfect mattress that lets you gently glide into the realm of dreams. Since sleep has an important function for the regeneration of the body, it is worth investing time, effort and of course money in the choice of mattresses.

If one has once enjoyed the feeling to sleep on an optimally adapted mattress, will never want to do without it again.

Five points to check when choosing your mattress

It is not so much the technology used — latex, springs or foam — that counts, it would even be of little importance according to sleep specialists.

One must rather attach himself to the intrinsic qualities of the mattress, without forgetting that the box spring ensures a good part of the ventilation of its bedding.

It is better if it matches the mattress and, if it is slatted, that these are tight enough: the less the slats are spaced, the better the support.

Firmness: neither too soft nor too hard

The idea that a very firm mattress would be good for the back, or even that a board between the mattress and the box spring would fix everything, has nothing founded, quite the contrary.

If you move a lot during the night and you suffer from inflammatory pains, you will spend your time waking them up on a mattress that holds the body’s pressure points too rigidly.

Comfort: certain softness

Whatever technique is used, this is the formula to remember. A first impression of comfort, with a certain softness; a second sensation of correct holding of all parts of the body, in particular on its pressure points like shoulders, buttocks, etc..

That is the objective to be sought. Without neglecting the thickness of the mattress: the higher its density, the better it will absorb the “shocks” of night movements.

Temperature control

This is a dimension that we think little about, yet it is essential: the mattress must allow a good regulation of body temperature to ensure satisfactory sleep.

If we are too hot, we sleep badly, and the threshold of pain is modified. Natural materials (wool, cotton) generally ensure better heat exchange.

The right dimensions

One must be careful not to adopt too small dimensions for the choice of bedding, even if the space in which one is going to install it is not very large. It is strongly recommended to go to 160 and even 180 cm.

If one of the two partners moves a lot, he will inevitably alter the quality of the sleep of the other and accentuate his pains by modifying by his movements the comfort in which his partner had settled.

The right sleeping positions

Rifle dog with arms crossed comfortably on chest and head resting on a soft pillow (with shape memory).

The flat stomach position is harmful to the cervical and lumbar spine, especially in cases of osteoarthritis and disc pinches.

What type of bedding to choose?

Hard, soft, spring, slat, foam, latex, or water, which bed should you choose for your back?

The hard bed: firm or extra-firm suitable for columns in good condition, young, without excessive curvature.

Particularly recommended for children, it is the traditional bed of Eastern countries. It can consist of a simple mattress of cotton, (futon) foam or latex placed on the floor.

It is not recommended for heavy people or those with serious spinal problems.

The spring bed: for geo-biologists, it constitutes an electromagnetic accumulator to avoid in nervous subjects.

If you like this type of sleeping, it is necessary to do it again as soon as the springs give the first sign of fatigue.

The bed too soft, danger: falsely comfortable this bed predisposes to difficult awakenings. It is particularly contraindicated if you are prone to low back pain.

The bed with flexible slats: this bed represents a serious progress compared to the board.

To be effective, the slats must be mounted on hinges and have the flexibility to adapt to the weight of the various parts of your body. It may be sufficient for columns without significant deformation problems.

The latex mattress: very flexible, adapting to the shape of your spine, it allows a correct rest for a reasonable investment.

It is the best if it is completed by mobile slats. You must choose a mattress containing at least 85% natural latex. Labels allow you to find your way around.

The waterbed: it was in fashion twenty years ago. It is recommended for people with significant spinal deformities (severe scoliosis, lumbar and cervical hyperlordosis, back kyphosis).

The shape memory mattress: it is indicated for deformed and asymmetric columns (scoliosis, kyphosis…) and arthritis.

Ask your osteopath for advice. The shape memory pillow with physiological curves is very comfortable.

There is also a shape memory mattress overlay that adds softness to your classic bedding. This solution can considerably improve your comfort.

What degrees of hardness are there?

Mattresses are offered in different degrees of hardness. The main criterion for the award of the degree of hardness is the body weight.

The degrees of hardness are given by a number from 1 to 5, where 1 denotes the lowest degree of hardness, i.e. the softest mattress.

Read on below in more detail for which the individual degrees of hardness are suitable, wherein in addition to the body weight and the sleeping position should be considered.

However, these tips do not replace the personal assessment, because ultimately the feeling of “softness” or “hardness” of a sleeping pad is based on the individual.

Hardness 1 (H1)

Mattresses with the lowest strength are marked with the hardness grade 1 (H1). These mattresses are only suitable for people with a body weight of less than 60 kilograms.

Accordingly, such mattresses are usually offered only for cots. If you weigh more than 60 kilograms, you should not purchase a mattress of this caliber, even if you love the feel of a soft pad.

The mattress would lose its strength after a short time and inevitably cause discomfort.

Hardness 2 (H2)

Grade 2 mattresses are recommended for people weighing between 60 and 80 kilograms.

These mattresses are the most popular mattresses of women and those who generally find a relatively soft mattress pleasant.

Often, these are side sleepers. You need a gentle support of the neck area. Although it is the second degree of hardness, these mattresses are often referred to as “medium hard”.

Hardness 3 (H3)

Grade 3 mattresses are by far the most widely sold models. They are suitable from a weight of 80 kilograms. However, an upper limit is not specified.

The recommendations vary between 100 and 120 kilograms.

Many back sleepers prefer this degree of hardness — because it supports the lumbar area so that the spine is straight. A “sagging” of the pelvis is avoided. These mattresses are referred to as “medium strength” to “solid”.

Hardness 4 (H4)

Because mattresses of hardness grade 3 lack a general upper weight limit, mattresses with a degree of hardness of 4 are recommended from a body weight of 100, 110 or 120 kilograms.

Most of these mattresses are called “very hard”. In some cases, they are even called “ultra hard”.

This is always the case when no mattresses grade 5 is on offer. Belly sleepers are often among the users who like a hard mattress.

Hardness 5 (H5)

Mattresses with this degree of hardness are called “ultra hard”. Because they are very rarely in demand, many manufacturers do not have these variants in the program.

On the one hand, it is therefore not recommended to choose a hard mattress because it forces the spine into an unnaturally curved position and, on the other hand, can also lead to pressure points and reduced blood flow.

Grade 5 mattresses are therefore suitable only for very heavy people.

The right degree of hardness determines your sleep!

Only if you lie on a mattress that is suitable and pleasant in terms of the degree of hardness, you can look forward to restful nights.

Too soft mattresses let the spine sag and inevitably lead to back pain as hard mattresses. Optimal is a mattress that yields more to the heavy body parts such as the head and the pelvis.

Thus, the spine can lie straight in any sleeping position and regenerate at night from the efforts of the day.

For this reason, it is important not only to the degree of hardness, but also that the mattress is divided into different lying areas.

If you want to buy new mattresses for a double bed, the appropriate degree of hardness should be chosen so that both partners wake up refreshed.

So it’s not recommended to buy a double bed that is factory fitted with the same mattresses on both sides. Both partners have the same physical constitution is relatively unlikely, so there should always be an individual adjustment.

Which mattress should be chosen for physical complaints?

If you already have back pain problems, choosing the right degree of hardness is particularly important.

In this case, it is recommended to choose an ergonomic mattress. These Orthopedic mattresses are suitable for people who suffer from disc discomfort and are also recommended when a spinal deformity causes problems.

With these mattresses, special attention is paid to different lying areas. They have shoulder depression.

The middle zone must be harder than the shoulder area. Pocket spring mattresses provide good point elasticity, allowing them to adapt to the body perfectly.

These spring mattresses also have excellent air circulation and are therefore very suitable for people who sweat heavily at night.

Cold foam mattresses also fit the body perfectly. They are suitable for people who freeze easily at night, because they store the body heat longer than spring mattresses.

Which mattresses are optimal for heavy people?

Heavy people need sturdier mattresses that have special reclining properties, because the body of heavy people is usually more sensitive to pressure than that of light people.

The mattresses should be higher as the body sinks deeper. It is not recommended to resort to a mattress with a degree of hardness of 5.

On the one hand, the increased sensitivity to pressure has to be taken into account and, on the other hand, the sleeping position should also be taken into account.

How to make a mattress firmer?

Good as you probably guess a little there is no miracle solution (we forget immediately the story of putting a wooden board under the mattress please!).

The only real solution that is possible if your mattress is too soft is the purchase of a fairly firm mattress topper.

We know that a lot of bedding retailers also offer box springs that are supposed to give a little more firmness to a mattress but the difference is really minimal so it will clearly not be enough if you are looking to harden your mattress.

The mattress topper remains the most appropriate solution to firm a mattress too soft whether new or worn.

What to use to firm a mattress?

Hard slatted bases or upholsterers can help to restore some firmness to a mattress.

It is often recommended to buy a firm bed base for ultra-soft mattresses but if you do not need a box spring it is clearly recommended the option of the mattress that remains less expensive and less cumbersome.

Attention to mattresses too old/sagging

source

All of the above information is only valid if you have purchased a new mattress or if the mattress you want to firm is not too saggy with a pronounced hollow in the pelvis and other body support areas.

If your mattress has a visible hollow in the center or just that you can see the silhouette of your body in the foam (it is very rare we must admit it except on mattresses at discount prices of poor quality).

You just have to reinvest in a new mattress because it does not matter the mattress topper, it will follow the shape of the hollow once lying on it.

We do not really have a precise figure or rule regarding the sagging of the mattress after which an over-mattress will be ineffective to firm it nevertheless the range between 2 and 5 cm seems to be quite realistic.

Does a bad mattress aggravate back pain?

The mattress plays a role in preventing back pain, but it can also heal if it is the cause. A bad mattress causes and aggravates back pain.

A good mattress must respect the curvatures of the body of the one who uses it. These bends are fundamental because they allow the human body to reduce the efforts to bear due to body weight and gravity.

A good mattress must fit the body shape while providing good support.

Tips to avoid back pain:

  • In a sitting position (a third of life), avoid bad positions in the car, at the office…

  • When standing (another third), do not lift heavy loads without precautions, do not

  • Not too much stress on the back muscles when playing sports, DIY…

  • When lying down (the last third of life), you have to be careful about the quality of the bedding.

At the level of neck pain

Pain can appear in the neck: neck pain is a pathology often related to the quality of the pillow: a good pillow should be wide enough to take into account that we often turn over at night.

It must also fill the space between the nape of the neck and the upper back and not descend under the back.

Do not sleep without a pillow. On the other hand, watch out for excessively rounded bolsters that can press on a large nerve when the head is too raised.

6 signs that it’s time to change mattresses

Good support is essential to avoid pain and back problems. Find out when it’s time to invest in new bedding.

1). Do you feel the springs or battens of the mattress? The depressions or humps were formed? It’s time to invest.

Good to know: a worn bed base accelerates the deterioration of the mattress. “Something to do the inventory: whether slatted or spring loaded, press a part of the mattress very solicited (at the buttocks or shoulders) and then on a part not very subject to pressure (at the level of If the difference in flexibility is noticeable, the bed base is to change.

2). If you are convulsed upon awakening, whether it is the back, cervical, head or kidneys, it is a sign that the mattress has had its day and is no longer adapted to your morphology.

3). A sagging mattress waking up, even slightly, with the imprint of the body, difficulty in finding the position of sleep and feeling of depression mean that the bedding is to change.

A good mattress is firm enough to support the body, but soft enough to provide some comfort.

4). Do allergies appear or increase? The accumulation of dust and dust mites in the mattress and box spring may be involved.

To prevent them becoming allergen nests, vacuum them regularly and change them when they are too old.

5). Do you sleep less well than before? A night at the hotel is good for you? If you do not suffer from sleep apnea, particular stress or insomnia, you do not have to look any further: your bedding is in charge, and it is high time to change it.

6). Bad sleeping for two is also a sign of bad mattresses. A hollow in the middle of the bed, a burst with each movement, and the feeling of sleeping in a bowl indicate that the bedding does not properly fulfill its support function.

Which mattress to choose for back pain?

What is the best mattress (Geltex, latex, spring mattress, memory foam mattress) to relieve back pain and/or sleep at night when your back is crumbled?

Is the best mattress really the solution to back problems and conversely is a bad mattress really the cause (we think so because it’s something we’ve heard since we were little, but…what if it was a commonplace?)

You may be reading these lines because you can’t wake up every morning with an unbearable back pain (or is it your neck that hurts, or is it headaches?), and you incriminate the new mattress that cost you an arm, while your spouse who sleeps on the same mattress sleeps like a baby.

How to choose a good mattress for your bedroom?

A good mattress is one that provides sufficient support for the body when it is lying in a neutral position: the spine, buttocks, heels, shoulders and head must be properly supported.

A mattress that is too firm causes too much pressure on at least one of these points (which are the most important pressure points when lying down).

On the contrary, a mattress that is too soft does not offer enough support to these parts of the body and you pay cash with pain as soon as you wake up, if not in the middle of the night.

More important than the brand or type of mattress is the quality and firmness of the mattress, the level of support and if a firmer mattress is better suited to people with back problems, the best compromise is undoubtedly a mattress offering medium to firm support.

On a mattress firmness level scale ranging from 1 to 10, one would be somewhere between 6 and 7.

One study in Spain found that people with back problems sleep better and have less back pain when they wake up when they sleep in a mattress with medium firm support.

When should I buy a new mattress

People often say that you have to change your mattress every 10 years, but that’s a cliché.

If you wake up with pain in your lower back but manage to get rid of it after 20 minutes and a few stretches, it’s time to change mattresses.

If you’ve had it for 25 years and you sleep well and wake up feeling great, there’s really no reason to change mattresses.

To ensure optimal support function, the mattress must have a certain elasticity, so that the pressures are distributed over the entire body.

It must also be able to absorb perspiration and ensure its elimination by evaporation. The manufacture of the mattress incorporates various materials, such as rubber foam or polyether foam.

Before buying a mattress, test its flexibility, resistance, holding, support for the back while lying on it.

The deeper the shoulder and pelvic recess, the more suitable the mattress will be to maintain the right spine (side position) or to support the S curve (on the back).

A mattress too soft will let the body sag, with a risk of back pain. A mattress that is too hard can be accompanied by too much pressure on a number of stress points, with muscle and joint pains.

Here are some tips depending on the preferred position taken during sleep.

On the back

  • In this position, sleep is peaceful and the sleeper moves little. Very comfortable, it induces an excellent quality of sleep.

  • The weight is better distributed throughout the body.

  • The position of the spine is more natural.

  • There are not too many anatomical constraints on the back and neck.

  • But without a pillow, the head pulls back and the neck is weakened.

Tips

  • A pillow lower than if you slept sideways: medium and mid-high pillows so that your spine will return to position and your muscles will relax.

  • Firm enough for head, shoulders and neck to be supported effectively.

  • Flexible enough to allow sufficient head depression and promote a slight elongation of the cervical spine, conducive to opening the airways.

On the side

This position is the most widespread.

Sleep is on the side, as is the deep sleep phase. Beyond that, changes of position are frequent and sleep rather agitated.

The pillow helps bridge the gap between the neck and the mattress. It maintains your head and cervical vertebrae and ensures their alignment, guaranteeing your back a natural position.

Advice

For the alignment of your vertebrae to be perfect, the pillow must have three qualities.

Top to fill the space between the head and the mattress. To choose, check:

  • The width of the shoulders: the wider the shoulders, the higher the pillow must be.
  • The elasticity of the mattress: the firmer your mattress, the less your body sinks and the pillow must be high.

Firm so that the pillow does not sag under the weight of the head and compromises this necessary alignment with a suitable shape, which follows the curve of the head and neck to optimize your sleeping position and keep it all the time night.

On the belly

  • This is one of the least peaceful positions, involving fairly frequent changes.

  • It increases the curvature of the back, which damages both the cervical and lumbar spine and causes a jamming effect in the lower back.

  • Neck and head rotate so as not to impede breathing, which generates harmful tensions.

  • It pushes the abdominal contents to the chest and lungs, impeding breathing.

  • It sometimes causes nerve compression, imbalance and muscle aches.

Advice

The pillow should be as low as possible, supple, flat and not bulky. In this way, the head remains in the natural extension of the spine.

Your neck is no longer a victim of unevenness, your cervical vertebrae are preserved and the neck muscles relax.

Wrap Up

The choice of a mattress is very personal. It depends on the height, the weight but also on the person with whom we share it.

The difference in subsidence creates a slope into which our body is dragged during the night.

Whether our grandmothers like it or not, mattresses that are too soft do not help back pain. It’s better to choose a firm mattress. “But be careful not to confuse firmness with hardness.

The ideal mattress must be able to accompany the movements and curves of the body. Too rigid, on the contrary, it could awaken back pain and create hyper pressure on the hips and shoulders.
